Moving Checklist for Sellers

MOVING CHECKLIST

1.  Transfer or Cancel:

  • Utilities:  electric, gas, water, sewer, and trash
  • Cable, telephone (landline and cell phones), newspaper, and lawn services
  • Car registration and driver's license
  • Postal service - request mail forwarding
  • Bank accounts and safe deposit box
  • Insurance policies:  property, auto, and medical
  • Alarm/security company
  • Voter registration
  • Doctor, dentist, and other medical providers (make sure to have at least two weeks of prescription medicine on hand for the duration of your move)
  • Veterinarian
  • Health clubs
  • Your children's schools and daycare centers
  • Notify your contacts of your new address
  • Notify your employer of your new address

2.  Separate Your Items:

  • Make a list of what you will and will not be taking with you. If you are hiring a moving company, catalog your valuables by taking pictures.
  • Now is the time to purge. Decide how you will be getting rid of unwanted items by either selling them or donating them.
  • Consider renting a movable storage unit (such as POD) to store your belongings.  The unit can be transferred to your new address.

3.  Get packing!

  • Schedule movers as needed.  If you hire a moving company, keep all documents pertaining to your move until your possessions are delivered to your new home, the charges are paid, and any claims are settled.
  • Collect boxes, tape, bubble wrap, newspapers, garbage bags, and markers - or let your movers bring these items.
  • Disassemble furniture and pack all of your fragile household items.
  • Recycle flammable materials or containers, such as acids, cleaning fluids, matches, paint, etc.

4.  Last-Minute Details.

  • Have your car serviced if you are traveling a long distance.
  • Arrange hotel or other accommodations.
  • Make plans for pet care and/or lodging.
  • Check all closets, cabinets, and rooms one last time.
  • Turn off all lights and alarm systems before you lock up.

5.  Prepare for Settlement.

  • Maintain homeowner's insurance for 2-3 days after settlement.
  • Leave appliance manuals, warranty information, and spare keys in the house, or bring tosettlement.
  • Clean the house before the buyer's final walk through.  Don't forget to check the garage and attic.
  • Bring current photo identification.
  • If you are moving out of a condo or apartment, check your lease for moving rules and restrictions.
