2. Separate Your Items:
Make a list of what you will and will not be taking with you. If you are hiring a moving company, catalog your valuables by taking pictures.
Now is the time to purge. Decide how you will be getting rid of unwanted items by either selling them or donating them.
Consider renting a movable storage unit (such as POD) to store your belongings. The unit can be transferred to your new address.
3. Get packing!
Schedule movers as needed. If you hire a moving company, keep all documents pertaining to your move until your possessions are delivered to your new home, the charges are paid, and any claims are settled.
Collect boxes, tape, bubble wrap, newspapers, garbage bags, and markers - or let your movers bring these items.
Disassemble furniture and pack all of your fragile household items.
Recycle flammable materials or containers, such as acids, cleaning fluids, matches, paint, etc.
4. Last-Minute Details:
Have your car serviced if you are traveling a long distance.
Arrange hotel or other accommodations.
Make plans for pet care and/or lodging.
Check all closets, cabinets, and rooms one last time.
Turn off all lights and alarm systems before you lock up.
5. Prepare for Settlement:
Maintain homeowner's insurance for 2-3 days after settlement.
Leave appliance manuals, warranty information, and spare keys in the house, or bring to settlement.
Clean the house before the buyer's final walk through. Don't forget to check the garage and attic.
Bring current photo identification.
If you are moving out of a condo or apartment, check your lease for moving rules and restrictions.
